ETS allows you to cancel your appointment up to 4 days prior to the exam date to be eligible for the refund. Irrespective of how much in advance you place the cancellation request, you will be eligible for a refund equivalent to only 50% of the registration fee. For instance, if you were scheduled to appear for the test on a Friday, you must place your cancellation request no later than Monday. GRE retains the remainder of the registration fee to cover the expenses associated with processing your registration request and holding a seat for you at the test centre. All refunds are processed in US dollars, and ETS does not provide cash refunds1.
As mentioned above, GRE is administered in two ways. The first is the GRE General Test designed for students intending to pursue Master’s, doctorate, Juris Doctor (law), and MBA programs. There is also the GRE General Subject Test which you can take if you intend to specialise in specific subjects, including Maths, English Literature, Psychology, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry.
GRE General Test
Unlike most competitive tests where you have to answer all questions in serial order, the GRE General test is perhaps the only competitive level test that allows candidates to skip questions within sections and go back and change answers. It allows you to control the test and answer questions in sections where you feel you can score better. It largely analyses three crucial skills:
As a student appearing for the GRE General Test, you get to decide the score you wish to send to the schools you intend to attend. An optional aspect of the GRE exam fee includes retaking the test (by registering for it again). You can retake the test and send only those scores you want to your prospective schools. All of this is a part of the ScoreSelect®option, which is only available for GRE candidates.
GRE Subject Test
The GRE Subject Tests are designed to measure your knowledge of a specific field of study. It allows you to show how well versed you are with a particular subject, thus allowing graduate schools to notice your expertise and stand out from other applicants. It emphasises your in-depth knowledge and level of skill in a particular subject area. You need to have an undergraduate major in one of the three disciplines, which include:
The GRE® Mathematics test: This test consists of approximately 66 multiple choice questions, featuring 50% questions on calculus, 25% questions on Algebra, and 25% questions on additional topics like introductory real analysis, discrete mathematics, and other topics.
The GRE® Physics test: This test consists of approximately 70 five-choice questions, featuring 9 areas of content specifications, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, atomic physics, etc.
The GRE® Psychology test: This test consists of approximately 144 multiple choice questions across six areas of content specifications, including biological, cognitive, social, developmental, clinical & measurement/methodology/other.

The cost of registering for the GRE General test is $220 for students from all countries worldwide, except 5 countries. These include India, where the GRE exam fee is $262, and China, where the fee is $231.30. The GRE fee for the Subject Tests is $150 for students from all countries.
Yes, there are a few additional GRE costs such as rescheduling the exam date and centre, late registration fees, additional score reports, score review fees etc. These, however, are not mandatory and depend on whether you choose to avail of these services.
If you need to retake the GRE, you will need to pay the full registration fee again for each retake.
